H is for Headboard

I have been slowly redecorating my room from high school teenager into classy young adult!  I found a tutorial on pinterest to make a tufted headboard for my room.  It only took 4 hours to make - with no previous upholstery skills - and it cost a total of $80.  The most expensive part was the green foam - which runs at $32 per yard; I had a coupon though!  A tufted headboard is just one idea, but there are countless others.  I hope this inspires you to upgrade your headboard!

I'll tell you what G is not for...

G is definitely not for...
...Sorry sweets but those trends were in and out!

G is for global!
I've provided you a list of outfit destinations for your fashion map!  Experiment with what other fashionistas are wearing miles away from you.

First on our list is Greece.  I chose my inspirational pieces from Greek fashion designer Manos Karavlidis - his 2013 Spring Summer Collection.  Nude and white with a hint of bold color!  Greek fashion is soft and light with hard metallic accessories.  These outfits are practical and flirty for spring and summer!

Hong Kong fashion is next.  I chose Joyce Cheung's Blue and White Porcelain collection from Hong Kong's 2013 fashion week.  Her pieces were made from leather, neoprene and moulded latex which appeared as though they were cracked. She contrasted this strong look with softer fabrics like silk and organza. Her all-white palette emphasizes the futurism tone.  The future has arrived in Hong Kong!

South Africa fashion may be my favorite thus far!  It was very difficult to choose a designer for inspiration.  However, I managed to choose this collection from Joburg's Fashion week this spring.  This collection incorporates lace, feathers, and ruffles along with soft and rich colors; all very feminineThis collections brings a fresh look to older trends.  I highly suggest looking at Joburg's fall fashion show ---> click me!

I have to add Paris; it obviously needs to be a part of your fashion map.  I chose Chloe as an inspirational designer from Paris's 2013 fashion week.  Other fashion icons were Channel, Nina Ricci, Theirry Mulger, and Valentino - I deeply enjoyed their collections.  However, I enjoyed Chloe's statement pieces the best.  This spring and summer need statement pieces such as these: light fabrics paired with blacks/neutrals, solid colored hand bags, and movement.  Don't forget the strappy heals!

Your final destination for now is India.  However, the collection I chose was from New York's Spring/Summer fashion week 2013.  It is an Indian inspired collection with a mix of western vintage - who knew that those two unique styles would look so stunning together.  This collection entails elaborate beading and embroidery, light weight fabrics and romantic colors.

Your fashion map is ready to wear!  Experiment with what other fashionistas are wearing miles away from you!  Happy travels!

Sugar Coated Lifestyles

As a gift, I received the first season of Sex and the City Little did I know, that in three short months later, I would have finished watching the entire six seasons.  Sex and the City contains hours full of girl-talk, fabulous fashions, and lots of food for thought.  Even if you aren't searching for a relationship, Carrie Bradshaw speaks truth of not only men but society as she lives her New York life.

Even in the rural town I live in - which is no where near close to "The Big Apple" - I can relate to her words.  Here is my favorite quote from one of her columns.

"You don't have to sugar coat your feelings, but have New York women settled for sugar free existence as well?  We accept tasty delight instead of real ice cream, emails instead of love songs, and jokes instead of poems.  It's no wonder, that when we're faced with the real thing, we can't stomach it.  Is it something that we could learn to digest...?"

She makes a sure point that as a society we accept less than what we should; we're fine with just average when it comes to not only romance but quality in general.  Have our standards just changed because of modern times?  Or are we really settling for less?

F is for Fifties

In my opinion, modest is hottest!  Fifties fashion is flattering, clean-cut, and is presented in a classy way.  The hemline is a little long for our time but that can easily be altered.  Thrift shops are the BEST place to find fifties treasures!  Blazers, kitten heels, buttons, large earrings, clutches, and high necklines all qualify!

Here's some fine fifties inspiration!

Turning Fabric Scraps into Cash

I've officially narrowed it down to two colleges that I want to go to!  I have been accepted to both, now I have to choose and pay.  I have applied to several scholarships, although I don't think those will be enough to cover the cost of tuition.  So, I've come up with a brilliant idea to help raise some money!

I have taken after my wonderful mother and have grown my own collection of fabric over the years.  Although, much of my fabric I've bought hasn't even been used yet.  So I decided to get rid of all my fabric and start fresh.

The best way to get rid of my fabric stash would be to use it all up!  So I've decided to make small projects from my scraps of fabric and sell them at craft fairs and on Etsy too!  All the money I make will go towards my college tuition!  I'm very excited about this and I plan to share my projects with you as I go.

I hope this "Scraps to Cash" idea will pull through!  Check out my Etsy!
Here's a preview of one of my items!

Thanks for looking,

Pantone has announced its pick for 2013's Color of the Year: Emerald...

It is a perfect dash of color to add into our wardrobe and lifestyle for the year!  Bazaar enough, I'm every excited about this color!  I've wanted to add emerald pieces to my closet, but it's been difficult to come by.

Does trust mean anything anymore?

Can it be summer already? ...Please?  It's been a few hours since school let out and I can't believe I'm still dwelling over the day's events; but how could I not??  Its "one of those days" where nothing seems to go right and things keep piling up and bad news keeps knocking on my door per say.  I don't want to turn my blog into a venting zone so I'm just going to say a few words from what I learned today.

It's all just a show!  Be careful who you trust because someone who may seem honest and caring, may not giving a crap.  To those of you who are still in high school, once you're out, you may never cross paths with those people again.  So don't go out of your way to impress them and put yourself first.  I constantly have to remind myself that.  Half the time I'm too busy trying to impress the people who could care less and I end up missing an opportunity to shine or I make a fool of myself.

"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind, don't matter; and those who matter, don't mind." - Dr. Seuss

"30 years from now, it won't matter what jeans you wore, how popular you were, what your hair looked like, or what sneakers you wore.  What will matter is what you made of your education, and where it took you in life." - Unknown

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”- H. Jackson Brown Jr.

Today is your day.  Own it.

Thanks for reading, sometimes we just need a reminder to keep motivated,

Love, Jess
